Foundation Support Enhances Cheshire's Training Programs!

Posted Fri, Jan 23rd, 2015 By

Cheshire Home is known for its unique training and education programs that enable young adults with paralysis to gain independence. Residents who come to Cheshire have suffered physical and emotional trauma, and in the early stages of their rehabilitation they experience a disconnect from the world they knew and the life they lived. Now paralyzed, they first face the enormous challange of re-gaining basic self-sufficient life skills, and then advancing to independent lifestyles of their choosing.

Our training and education programs help them do just that. Each participant uses assistive technology, purchased through grant support, that enables them to once again use the computer as a tool for communication, socialization, and education. Curriculum is individualized and instruction is one-on-one.  Training topics are varied and include computer proficiencies, college preparation, reading, math, and employment training.

Once residents complete their personal training programs, they move forward with plans for higher education and employment. Often they will take onsite positions at Cheshire Home in preparation for their transition back into the community. Many of our residents work as front desk receptionisists, mail clerks, or as our boutique cashier. Several are employed as presenters of our innovative disability awareness program, ABLE (Awareness by Learning Experience).

Access to the Cheshire training and education programs is extended to students with disabilities who reside in the community. Many live in Morris County and surrounding areas, but students and their families often opt to travel greater distances in order to participate, and to have the opportunity to thrive within our learning environment.

Our programs, which are life-transforming, are made possible through the generosity of your private donations, and foundations that have provided much-needed support: the Kessler Foundation, the Neilsen Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the TD Charitable Foundation, and the Madison Rotary. We are grateful for each contribution, as they touch a life each day and help those we serve achieve.
