A.B.L.E. Program

Each year Cheshire Home presents our disability awareness program, A.B.L.E.,( Awareness By Learning Experience), to area elementary and middle schools. A.B.L.E. offers new perspectives to students about the realities of living with a disability. The 1.5 hour program includes an overview of Cheshire Home, activities to simulate a variety of disabilities and a question and answer session with residents.

Cheshire instructor Eric Levine, pictured here with resident Luz and Vocational Director Jayne Dellon, presents the program, which is facilitated by residents who share their life experiences.  Residents first train to become Cheshire Home A.B.L.E. employees, and observe the program prior to participating actively. Program activities include a wheel chair obstacle course, identifying coins while blind folded, reading through a mirror and completing a task with the less dominant hand.

We're pleased to share that we bring the program to the following schools on an annual basis: Brooklake School in Florham Park, Lake Parsippany School in Parsippany, Burnett Hill School and Riker Hill Elementary in Livingston, Central Avenue School and Kings Road School in Madison, Jefferson School in Summit, Lincoln Elementary School in Caldwell, Lincoln Park Elementary School in Lincoln Park and Pines Lake School in Wayne.

Cheshire Home offers this program free of charge. A donation is greatly appreciated.

For further information about the A.B.L.E program, which is also provided to scout troops, businesses, and community organizations, or to schedule a presentation, please contact the Community Resource Center at (973) 966-1232 ext. 235 or 236.
